Guide Review - Bristol Baking Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Hamburger Buns

If you've been looking for gluten-free hamburger buns, I recommend that you try these delicious soft rolls from Bristol Baking, a gluten-free, dairy-free Michigan bakery.

Bristol Baking sent me samples of their plain buns and their onion buns, but for various reasons -- holidays, heavy travel, my conviction that I needed to lose weight -- the buns arrived just when I couldn't conveniently eat them and write about them. Besides, now that I'm used to surviving without bread products, it was hard to get enthusiastic about a gluten-free hamburger bun. I was expecting another disappointing approximation of the rolls I ate before my celiac disease diagnosis. So, I stashed them in the freezer, until the owner of Bristol Baking politely reminded me that I'd promised her a review, good or bad.

Well, I love them. They're great for sandwiches as well as for burgers, and as Bristol Baking points out, if you fold one in half it makes a good gluten-free hot dog bun, too. My favorite way to eat one is simply to microwave it for a couple of seconds, melt some margarine on each half, and savor it with a cup of tea. If like me you don't have a sweet tooth, you might like these rolls better than cake.

Speaking of cake reminds me to warn you, however, that each roll contains 230 calories. That's a significant percentage of my daily calorie allotment on my lose-a-pound-a-week diet, so I have to save them for special treats. If I weren't dieting, I'd have one every morning with breakfast and every night before bed.

Another word of warning: a package of 8 buns is $8.80, again proving how expensive it is to buy ready-made gluten-free products. (A pack of 8 store-brand hamburger rolls costs $1.75 in my neighborhood.) But if you're sending your kid off to a party, being able to send along a hamburger or hot dog roll could be priceless.
