In June 2008, members of The National Association of College & University Food Services were invited to tell about the resources available at their institutions for the gluten-free college student with celiac disease. Below is information provided by Karen Dougherty, Director of Communications & Nutrition at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

What advice would you give to a high school senior with celiac disease who is applying to college?

Contact the college dining service early; don't wait until you arrive. Have a list prepared of the things you like to eat.

What special accommodations would your school’s dining services be able to make to feed a student with celiac disease or food allergies?

We will buy gluten-free foods and prepare something special if nothing on the featured menu that is gluten-free is liked.

Are students allowed to have cooking appliances in the freshmen dorms (such as microwaves, hotplates, toaster ovens, etc.)?

No.

How can people contact you for more information?
