Definition:

Difficulty digesting or absorbing nutrients from food.

Many diseases can lead to malabsorption. Celiac disease is one of the most common causes. In celiac disease, damage to the lining of the small intestine prevents proper absorption of nutrients.

Symptoms of malabsorption can include:

  • diarrhea
  • bloating or cramping
  • failure to thrive or grow appropriately
  • frequent bulky stools
  • muscle wasting
  • distended stomach

Malabsorption that continues for a long time can result in malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies, affecting growth and development in children and leading to illnesses in both children and adults.
