Not Really Gluten-Free: Check to Be Sure You Didn't Buy these Products

Last week in a blog entry I mentioned a Chicago Tribune article about incorrect allergen labeling. Now I’ve read, on eFoodAlert.com, that nearly 8,500 pounds of cooked chicken strips with a gluten-free label have been recalled after the manufacturer discovered the chicken strips may contain wheat:
  • John Soules Foods FULLY COOKED CHICKEN BREAST STRIPS WITH RIB MEAT, Italian Style, GLUTEN FREE. Establishment No. "P-2128" inside the USDA mark of inspection. UPC code 034695 123973 and "USE BY" date of "Dec 27 08" or "Jan 2 09" on the back of the bag.
  • John Soules Foods FULLY COOKED CHICKEN BREAST STRIPS WITH RIB MEAT, Rotisserie Style, GLUTEN FREE. Establishment No. "P-2128" inside the USDA mark of inspection. UPC code 034695 123980 and "USE BY" date of "Dec 27 08" or "Jan 2 09" on the back of the bag.
The recalled chicken was sold in retail stores (including Sam’s Club Stores) in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

Yesterday eFoodAlert.com also reported on a major recall of gluten-containing foods mislabeled as gluten-free in Quebec.
